ENGLISH

This week in are reading groups we had to write an extract. It could only have 100 words or less. We could write it on whatever we wanted it to be on. But it had to include Everyone clapped and cheered apart from………. somewhere in the extract. I only just made it with 99 words. This is my extract;

Yes Jake quickly. I’m sprinting down the field, the fastest I have ever run. Jake kicks it to me. It’s all up to me it’s my chance to shine like the sun. I trap it with my foot. The crowd freezes apart from me. As I dribble the ball down to the goals, my legs begin to tire. I’m on a fast break. The crowd unfreezes. I boot the ball it soars through the air like an army jet. It just lands in the goal.  The umpire blows the whistle. Everyone clapped and cheered apart from Bob, Jake’s brother.

GYMNASTICS

Recently for PE we have been doing gymnastics for a double lesson each Friday. We have done many different partner balances and individual balances. My favourite individual balance is the frog balance.

To do the frog balance you have to bend your knees and squat. Then you lock your elbows on the inside of your knees and put your hand on the ground. It is easier if you spread your fingers apart like a ducks foot (web) so that all your weight is spreading more evenly on your hands. When you’re ready push down on your hands and gradually bring your legs up.

TIP: If it is your first time of doing it you might want to put something soft in front of you in case you fall forwards!!

My favourite partner balance is a balance that involves two people and I’m unsure of the name. It is easiest if the two people are pretty different in size. The heaviest person stands on the bottom with their legs bent as far as they can. The lighter person then does either the monkey grip or just holds hands (monkey grip is easiest) with the heavier person. When they are comfortable the lighter person then puts one foot on one of the heavier persons’ legs just above the knee. Next do the same with the other leg. To be balanced the heavier person (stronger) lowers the person standing on them and their will be a different angle depending on who they are. To get off of the person you must always have two parts touching, so you take one leg off then the next leg and the let go with your hands.

TIP: Do not do unless you’re confident you can do it safely.

Today the 1st of July we did gymnastics and we did a circuit that involved practising handstands & head stands, jumping off of an acromat and landing in the motorbike position and forward and backward rolls as well as forward dive rolls. When we had done each activity we then changed the circuit to two things jumping over a horse using an acromat and landing on a mat and practising doing tricks with balls (throwing it doing a cartwheel and catching it). Firstly we took the middle cube out of the horse and jumped over that and then we put it back in and jumped over it. I was very scared that I wouldn’t make it. I just made it and I had to bend my legs heaps.

ROCKETS

On Thursday the 7th of July we launched our bottle rockets between recess and lunch (3 lessons). Each group launched their rocket 4 times. The best rockets got up to 50-60 metres. We made them with two 2 litre bottles, carpet tape and your choice of weight (nuts, bolts etc.) and material for the wings. My groups rocket was ok it didn’t go to high or straight. It was great fun launching our rockets.

NARRATIVE FOR LITERACY AWARD

Last term in English we learnt about narratives. At the end of the term we had to do a narrative for this thing we have at are school called ‘Literacy Award’ we do it every year on different things. This year it had to be on an animal but you  couldnt say what it was until the end. Please leave a comment if you can figure out what animal it is.  This is mine;

I JUST WANT TO LIVE IN THE WILD

“I wonder what it’s like to live in the wild?” whispered Charlie to his younger sister Zoe, very early on a wintery Sunday morning at the Adelaide Zoo.

“Same here”, replied Zoe.

As Johnny the new zoo keeper opened up the door of the freshly mowed enclosure. The smell of their breakfast wafted through the air. Charlie and Zoe rushed to the door for their breakfast chopped up, rabbits, antelope and gazelle.

“Good morning”, happily chirped Johnny and rubbed them both on their heads. Then when Johnny opened the bucket there was a rustle from their parents as they woke up to get their breakfast.

The day was just like any other day tourists taking photos of Charlie and Zoe.

“I’m sick of this; it’s like were famous there’s paparazzi everywhere”, mumbled Zoe.

“Well if you’re sick of it lets go to the wild”, suggested Charlie

“Tonight”, chorused the siblings.

“Ok we need to make a plan, first how are we going to get out of this zoo?” declared Charlie.

“I know when everyone has gone home including Johnny we can jump the small fence that borders the zoo. I don’t know what next maybe go to that Semaphore Jetty that have those big boats that sometimes take food and supplies that always go to Africa, the ones that Johnny talks about”, suggested Zoe.

“Did someone say food”, said their dad.

“Don’t worry”, chorused the siblings.

As night fell Charlie and Zoe were nearly prepared for their escape. Their parents were sleeping so Charlie thought that they had better go now or never.

“Come on Zoe lets go”, whispered Charlie

“Hang on Charlie I’m just going to say see you to Mummy and Daddy (without waking them up) because you do know that we might not ever see them again don’t you?” replied Zoe.

“Yes I know”, answered Charlie.

“Ok now jump as high as you can”, suggested Charlie. They both cleared the fence without a doubt and were now on their way to the wild. The siblings were as happy as a pig in mud. As they got closer to what looked like a big bath but Johnny had always referred to it as St Vincent’s Gulf the sun was coming up. Then they came across a chip packet but not just any ordinary chip packet a cheese ball chip packet. Charlie looked at it strangely because he had never seen a chip packet (with a cheetah on it) before. The wind picked up and blew the packet chip packet just out of Charlie’s reach.  As Charlie stretched out his little paw and pounced on it to try to stop it from blowing further down the footpath he gave himself a little nudge to see if he had actually seen a chip packet with a cheetah on it and wasn’t dreaming.  Charlie and Zoe kept on walking; sleepily as they hadn’t had much sleep the last two nights because they were busy watching Bondi Vet.

When Charlie and Zoe were only a few metres away from what surely would have to be the Semaphore Jetty. The sun was directly above them and was as hot as African bushland.

“Hey Charlie is that the Semaphore Jetty that Johnny always talks about, just over that busy road with really fast and noisy cars?”, questioned Zoe as her heart sunk with fear.

“Yes I think it is” replied Charlie. “Hey look up there it says Semaphore Jetty on that big sign so we must be in the right spot. Also I have a slight suspicion that this road is called Military Road. It’s very busy because it’s peak hour traffic time”.

“What’s peak hour traffic?” asked Zoe

“Ohh it’s just when all the kids get out of school and adults finish work for the day the roads are as busy as bees”, replied Charlie.

“But how do you know that?” questioned Zoe.

“Well Johnny always says “I better go to beat the peak hour traffic””, said Charlie hoping he was right. “Oh and were just in luck there’s one of those really big boats there right now and I think it says ‘Dream Big’. We better hurry up so we don’t miss it because they only come every couple of months”

“But I want to go to Africa not Dream Big”, cried Zoe.

“Don’t be silly it’s just the name of the boat”, laughed Charlie.

“Oh how was I supposed to know that”, yelled Zoe.

The siblings then came to a halt they had no idea how to cross a road and where to cross a road. Charlie then spotted a lot of people gathered round a pole that changed colour.

“Zoe why don’t we go over there and see what those people are doing near that pole”, suggested Charlie.

When they got there all the people started to walk across the road so Charlie and Zoe copied them hoping it was the right thing to do.

“How nice are these cars they’ve stopped just to let us walk across the road”, whispered Zoe to Charlie

Charlie and Zoe were now right in front of the boat on the Semaphore Jetty. The boat started and it made an extremely loud noise then a lot of smoke came out of the engine and the boat quietened down a bit.

“How are we supposed to get on the boat?” asked Zoe.

“I don’t know maybe we could jump into that small wooden box over there at the back of the boat”, suggested Charlie.

“Sounds like a brilliant idea”, chorused the siblings.

“Ok when I count to three run and then jump. ONE….. TWO…. THREE and jump”, shouted Charlie.

There was a crash sound as Charlie and Zoe landed in the box on the back of the boat and the lid of the box slammed shut. That night Charlie and Zoe fell asleep, with ease.

When Charlie and Zoe woke up they were still very tired and inside the box. Soon enough the box was opened a smell wafted through the air it smelt like Africa. Charlie looked up and there was a man looking down at them. Charlie made a purr like sound and the man smiled.

“Yes we made it to the wild”, said the siblings as they made a birdlike chirping sound to communicate to each other in their cheetah like language.

Footy Clinic

Today we had a footy clinic. It was alot of fun. The clinic went through the basic skills of footy. We had to tackle a tackle bag,  practise drop punt kicks, handballing and we had a competition on who could kick the furthest out of you and you’re partner. At the end everyone got a glenelg footy poster. I can’t wait till next year.

Skipping

For fitness on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we have been practising and sharing skills skipping because are school is involved with  jump rope for heart! At lunch I also skip with my friends I have learnt many new skills since we have been doing it. On Wednesay that just went my class helped a Reception/year 1 class to skip. We paired up with them and I taught my partner how to jump in a rope, how to run in on a big rope and how to skip with a partner with one rope. It was lots of fun. We also had a demo team come to our school and show some of their skills. I can’t wait until our schools jump off.

English

Two terms ago our class was learning about Expositions. Since Advertising is a type of persuading technique we had to make and advert. I mad mine on Powerpoint but you could do it on paper. We had to think up a product and write about the techniques we used. This is mine;

Veggie Patch

Today half of our class started making our veggie patch while the other half was at choir. We had to find an area and weed it. I got stung by a stinging nettel about 7 times. Even though we wore gloves. Next week we will probably plant some veggies.

Today in a lesson we went back to our veggie patches. We planted some potatoes and tidyed it up a bit.

SCIENCE

In science this term we have been learning about the human body. We have been looking at many systems including the Nervous System, Circulatory System, Skeletal System. Our class cut open a sheeps brain and a sheeps heart. In the lesson we cut open a sheeps brain we learnt about all the parts and their jobs. Then we had to try and see if we could see the parts. Also in Guided Reading we had been reading about the brain to learn more. When we cut open a sheeps heart we also had been reading about the heart in Guided Reading. In the lesson we cut open the heart we looked at our heart beat and what changes if you do excercise. We also learnt that your heart beat is actually your valves opening and letting blood through and then closing. Valves are only one way so the blood can only go down and can’t go back up through them other wise the blood would get no where. We also have been looking at the human skeleton and naming and learning the bones. Did you know the biggest bone in your body is the femur it goes from your hip to your knee cap (patella).

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Yesterday Thursday we had a Jump Off to show and share with other people what we had learnt over a few weeks. There were 4 stations but each class only did 3 we paired up with a younger class. That we had previously had a fitness lesson with teaching them how to skip. The 3 stations we went to were long ropes in the hall, Individual skipping outside the hall and Long Ropes outside the art room.  In the hall I did a couple of pushups over the rope. It was great fun. A couple of classes did demos.

    Hi Sarah,
Thanks for visiting our class blog Look What’s Happening in Room 102
    http://teacher102.edublogs.org/
This is great that you have your own blog. Your frog balancing looks tricky but must be great for your agility and movement. I don’t think I have great balance but I do like to exercise. I like to bike, ski, walk. I have been a runner but am not in the best shape right now. Trying to do more. We are still on our summer vacation here. We have two more weeks left. Keep up your great work.
